Startling Arrest in Wellington.

WELLINOTOjr, January 28. — Walter Millies Phillips, general manager in New Zealand for the Imperial Insurance Company, was arrested here this morning on a charge laid at t hi instance of the Company of having defrauded it of £406 Is by means of a bogus fire, purporting to have taken place in Armaghstreet, Christchurch, in March, 1899. The allegation is that accused represented to the Company such a fire had taken place and by sending Home the usual evidence of proof of loss obtained £400 from the Company and also expenses of a trip to Christchurch. Accused was brought before the Magis trate's Court this morning and remanded till Ist February.
