January 25. — The Borough Council , met this evening, but out of respect for the memory of the dead Queen adjourned after passing the following resolution :—: — " That there be placed on record the heartfelt sorrow of the members of this Council at the death of our late revered Sovereign and their deep sense of the heavy loss that the Empire has sustained in the removal of one who as a Ruler was truly Great and in domestic and social life an example to her subjects." Yesterday was obse-ved as a day of mourning by the closing of shops acd business places and the postponement of several functions that had been arranged. ,
It is probable that the Mounted Rifles will attend Church Parade on Sunday.
There has been a welcome rain that has replenished tanks and freshened up tho pastures, but the weather to-day is un seasonably cold. Shell rocking the Ohura Road has recommenced from the end of the present metal, some 13 miles from here, and papa - burning at Whangamomona for road-making purposes. The Government is to bo congratulated on turning over a new leaf with the new century. It ban been the custom during the nineteenth century to allow three-fourtr s of the summer to pass before commencing work on the roads. Now only one-half of the available months have been allowed to slip by. _________
