DEATH OF A FIREMAN AT A FIRE. | PER PRESS AB3"«ATrON.J Christchurch, October 7. — Yesterday afternoon a little son of Mr Rhodes, Sydenham, got a piece of carrot stuck in his throat, and although ho was quickly taken to tho hospital, the obstruction could not bo removed before the child was asphyxiated. The little boy, Harold Cowper, wko was run over by a tram car in Richmond on Thursday, died yesterday from the effects. At the inquest a Verdisfr of accidental death was reported, no blame being nth'chable to anyone. About 8 o'clock last night a fire broke out in Colombo street, Sydonhim, in a storo and stables owned by Mr Gill, and occupied by Wm. West. Tho buildings wore completely destroyed, and. during the progrois of tho firo, Engineer William Abbot, of the Christchurch Fire Brigade, fell down in a fainting fit while driving the extinguisher engine. He was carried into a shop close by and medical aid summoned, but he expired without regaining consciousness. He had been in the Brigade a number of years, and leaves a wife and five young children.
