The SHr Football Club's anweu* social vy.is ha!d in tho Theatre Roj»t on "We«l- ! nesd.iy night, and was a« unqualified success. There was a very largo attend1 ance of tin public, including members of the Otago and Taranaki teams, and, as usual with gatherings promoted by the SHr Club, the arrangements were carried; out in a highly satisfactory manner. A formal welcome was extended to tha visitors by the Mayor (Mr E. Dockrill), who congratulated tho team on their win that day. He also spoke consolingly to the members of ihe Taraoaki team. Mr Hutchison, manager of the team, replied, and stated that tha Otago men had that day met opponents who> would give a good account of themselves at Auckland. Ha thanked one and all for the courteay which had been extended to tho team during their stay in New Plymouth. The Ladies Committee of the social had at the head Mrs Dockrill, Misses E. Bellringer, Crocker, and Humphries, and to them is duo a large share of the credit for the enjoyable nature of the dance. Messrs A. Thomson, E. and A. Humphries were Masters of Cci ©.monies, and Mr C. B. Lever carried out tho secretarial work.

During the evening a pleasing ceremony in the form of a presentation to Mr L. Allen, the well-known footballer, took place. The Mayor referred in very flattering terms to Mr Allen's performance on the football field, and to iha regret which was generally felt by ;hisretirement from football. His Worship^ concluded his remarks by handing to MrAllen a purse of sovereigns, which had', been subscribed by his New Plymouth, admirers. The recipient briefly returned . thauks.
