On Fiiday we were informed by cable (hat General Joubert bad been compelled toreJirqni-h the cemmand of the Boer Aimy iv Natal to Commandant Bchalk Burger; and tbat be :s now at Tolksiusfc, on (be frantvaal border, .under medical treatment, - Mr Scbalk Burger, who has assumed command of the Boers, was (sajs «hs military contributor to (h«* Übristcburch Press) born in ihe Trans vaa', his father beiDg President of the Republic at the time (1877) that SirT. Bhepaione annexed the country to Ihe British Crown. Mr t-'chalk Burger was one of the candidates for the Presidency at the last general election in 1898, in opposi(ion to Paul Kmger and Joubert. -Mr Burger stood as a progressive candidate, ted was backed up by the Cbam- „ btr of Mints of Johacnfsburg, as prominent Uitlandcrs believed he could carry the bu'gheis with him to adopt liberal measures. But the prrgresaive burghers dnikd their support between Joubert and BuTger, and many progressive Boers became disgusted, acd would not sup port (i.her of the iwo candidates, so (hit Oom Paul w s returned to power with over two thirds of the burghers in support of his policy of repro?ion. Mr Schalk Bnrger was educated at Durban, and at Grey's College, Blcemfontein, in the OraDge Free State, and epcaks and wriies Enpi^h fretly. Ho ha 9 occupied tha position of Chairman of the Volksraad, and was very ambitious to carry out hia ideas iv regard to tho_ treatment of the Uitlauders.
