Carnival Week.
TnE HOLIDAYS AGREED UPON. At 10.30 o'clock this (Wednesday) morniug a meeting of business people was held in the Council Chambers to decide on the holidays to be observed during Carnival week. The Mayor (Mr E. Dockrill) was in the clnir.
Mr W. Ambury moved that tho business places be closed all day on Tutsday (Boxing Day), and" at one o'clock on WedntsJay, Thursday, and Friday, re opening from 7 till 10 o'clock each evening.
Mr A. Ambury said it was to be hoped all tbe business people would observe the Tuesday. Last jear'soveral shopkeepers fiigrantly di-jregardod the uuderstanding.
Mr R. Cock though 1 ; the police might be instructed to take action against those who opened on thit day, but the Mayor pointed out that Boxitg Day .was not a statutory ho!i lay.
Mr Berry said it would bo. better to close at noon instead of 1 o'clock, us it would enable tha employees to attend the different places of amusement. Ai-e-gards cpening of an evening, the oljjct was to make the town lively. He suggested .that the resolution should be altered to resd that the shops close ab 12 o clock.
After a desultory discussion, Mr Ambury made tho hour 12 30, and the motion was then seconded by Mr Blyth.
As an a-nendment Mr Berry mov-ed, and Mr Cock seconded, that the shops close at 12 o'clock. The amendment was carried.
An agreement was signed by those present that the days mentioned should be b' Hotly observed.
Ou Mr Berry's motion it was also decided to ask the Government and binks to clo-e the local offices on Tuesday, and at 12 o'clock on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.
