LICENSING APPEAL CASE.

Mr P. J. O'ltegan received a great ovation on his arrival here from Westport. Addressirjg the crowd he said his defeat was dus chiefly to tho fact that the pre judicas of the ignorant section of tho e'ectors were stirred up about the Transvaa', and paid cmi b tries wero secretly sent auiona the electors with ex'ricts from tha speeches of liish members of the Houso of Commons, and ha was secretly ao cused of holding the same views, although 'the persons responsible for this trick knew it was fal=o. He had also lost a lot of support th r ough not patronising the hotels, and though his opponents thought' they had attended his political funeral he was still a very live corpse, and would yet give the enemy plenty of trouble.
CONCILIATION BOARD.
Dunedin, December 12
The carpenters and joiners' dispute was before the Conciliition Board yesterday. The Amalgamated Society of Carpenters and Joiners asked fora week of 44 hours, piy Is 4£d per hour, overtime time and a htlf, preference to be given to Unionis^F. Messrs Raid & Graj objected to being made parties, and quoted tbe decision of Juitica Edwards in the engineering dispute in Christchurch. The Board over . ruled tha objection at that stage, and also a request from Messrs Thomson, Bridger, & Co to exclude them as a factory, in accordance with a decision at Auckland. After heariDg the statement of each side, tho Board a^jjurned until Wednesday to give its decision.
