OBITUARY.

DEATH OF MR JOHN SHAW. Anothbr of tho early pioneers of the district passed away on Tuesday afternoon in th« pereon of Mr John Bhaw, who died rather suddenly at tho residence of his son, Mr S. W. Shaw, on the Belc Road. The deceased gentleman bad eaten n hearty mid-day meal, in the course of which he had partaken of some new cheese. About 330 o'clock Mr Shaw, who had been out looking round the garden, came into the house and complained of feeling unwell, patting the trouble down to indigestion. He took something to ease tho feeling, bat a; he got worse Mra S. W. Shaw, who was confined to hor room through illness, was called. A doctor was also sent for, but Mr Shaw passed away quietly before medical aid could arrivo.

The late Mr Shaw arrived in the colony as quite a ynnng man. Leaving England in December, 1852, in the barque Sir Edward Pagefc, he had aa fellow passengers the late Sir Harry Atkinson. Mr Justice Richmond, Mr and Mrs Theophilus White (the last named being his sister), and several other well-known colonists. After a somowhat eventful voyage, during which they had to put back to Cowes for repaira, the Sir Edward Pagefc arrived safely at Auckland, whore she stayed over a month to land passengers and cargo, and it was August 16, 1853, before sho finally dropped anchor m the New Plymouth roadstead, the voyage having thus occupied nearly nine months, including stoppages. He carried on farming pursuits in tho Omata Block before the outbreak of the war, and when the Maoris broiie out in revolt he, with others, had his house burned and was driven off ,the land, ajd had to tako refuge in town. Mr Shaw did his share in quelling the rebollion, having been present at the engagement at Mahoetahi, and he was ''iv° ? tatloned a( > the Omata stockade. He had experienced all tho vicissitudes of au early settlor's life. At tho time of his death he was alout seventy yean, of age. Ho was twice married, his first wife, the mother of Mr VV. J. and Mr S. W. Shaw, having died thirty-two years ago, and tho second, the mother of Mr C. B. Shaw, nearly seven years ago.
