WAITARA TOWN BOARD. [FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.]

Tiie ordinary meeting of th« Town Board was held on Monday evening. Present : Messrs G. Pearco (Chairman), B. C. Lawrence, Thos. Elliot, P. E. Dover, W. Bent, B. A. Hignett, and Thos. Goddard. Mr Higuett moved the notice standing in his name from last meeting, viz., That the Chairman be requested to state if it bo a fact that Mr John Elliot has been permittod to got into arrears in respocb of rentals and rates owing to the Board to the extent of nine years, whether such arrears hare been recently paid, and if so what explanation tho Chairman' haa to offer the public in the matter. Mr Dover askad when this money wa* paid. This secretary replied that it was paid last March. There being no seconder the motion lapsed. Mr Hignett further moved, That the secretary bo instructed to prepare a statement showing the amount of bnrial fees and rentals derived from tho cemetary during tho 12 months ending June 30th. The Chairman explained what was being done in cemetery matters, also his own actioD as undertaker with regard to certain burial moneys, after hearing which Mr Lawrence moved that the Chairman's explanation to Mr Hignett's motion is satisfactory to the Board, Seconded by Mr Goddard. Mr Hignet moved an amendment that the Chairman's explanation is not satisfactory and calls for further investigations. The amendment lapsed for want of a seconder. Mr Lawrence's proposition was then put to the meeting and carried five voting for and one againßt. Mr Hignett said he would give the Chairmaa one week to resign Disposition. The Chairman : You are in too great a hurry to get my position. Mr Hignett : I dou't want it. The Chairman : Yes you do, it is plain to everybody. The question of clearing gorse off the streets wbb brought up. Sir Hignett pointing cut the amount of gorze that has been allowed to accumulata on the streets, and said the Chairman was one of tba worst offenders in this respect as witness one of the streets near the school reserve. The Chairman said that Mr Hignett has not been here very long and did not know what impiovement had been dono during years past on many of the streets, but much more required to be done yet, and would be done as fait as they could. Mr Elliot instanced several streets that had been cleared of furze not long since. It was finally decided on the motion of Mr Hignett, seconded by Mr Lawrence, that the Board's power with respect to clearing gorse off the streets be brought into operation. Correspondence from Major Parris and Mr Colson re library sites wore received' also from Messrs Bhnttleworth Bros. Mr Hignett proposed that on the recommendation of ratepiyers at public meeting, tho offer ■of Messrs Bhuttleworth Bros, ro purchase of section 3, bloqk 90, be accepted. Seconded by the Chairman, and carried. It wan also decided to pay the amount of £19 an deposit on same. Mr Elliot said the Board should be guided by tho amount of money available ior the purpose of building a new library. Mr Dorer suggested that the Board adjourn till Thursday next, the 9th, and go fully into the matter. Mr Elliot moved, That the Chairman, Mr Hignett, and Mr Dover interviow Mr Roy with regards to the Board's borrowing powers for library purposes, and the Board meet again on Thursday at 7 p.m. Secoided by Mr Lawrence, and carried. Mr C. Atkinson applied for transfer of lease part camp reserve to 1 himself from Mr A. Klenner. Application granted. — An application from Mr Coad for transfer of lease of blocks 19, 20, 21, 28, 29, 30 to Mr W. Baker was also granted. It was resolved that Messrs Joll Bros, bo written to requesting them te desist driving along th» footpaths near the old co-opera tivo store. Mr Elliot referred to the bad state of the curbing from the post office around to Went Quay, and suggested that tenders he called for stone breaking to complete that part of block 90, and that tenders close at next meeting of the Board. Agreed to. The Chairman mentioned that the fence arouodthe burial ground, Waitara West, rtquired repairing and tho gorse be cleared.— Left in the bands of the Works Committee to attend to. The Chairman informed tho Board that some Bix weekr? ago he had instructed Mr Colesby to fill up several holes in the road near the post office, and down Queenstreet, but on account of the bad weather and the bad stato of the pit, it was delayed for some weeks, but is now completed. — Approved, It was resolved that Mrs Stoddart be written to requesting her to remove tho box thorns that has been cut from her hodge and left on tho road. Mr Hignett gave notine to move, at the next meeting, that tho Chairman be requtsted to stato what check, if any, exited of tho sanitation of the townßhip, also that a property list bo prepared and kept in the office for tho information of the Board. Mr Hignett moved that Cameronstreet be levelled and the footpath formed, as at present it was useless owing to a wide ditch extending across the Htrcot.
