THE ARRIVAL OF THE NEW GOVERNOR.

♦_ LORD RANFUBLY'S RECEPTION IN WELLINGTON. [per tress association.] <Veli,ington, August 10.— The official I inception of Lord Ranfurly took place Ms afternoon". All except .the Richmond were crowded with spectators, and tha rain had by this time ceased, and passengers had a pleasant trip. , On reaching th» Governor's vessel, he was greeted by hearty cheers, led by Mr Hone Heke, M.11.1t. The latter then gave a Maori welcome in tho native tongue, those on board joining ia the choru3, and waving their handkerchiefs. A translation of the Jlaori runs: "Oh ! Governor, come hither. Welcome to Wellington, which standeth here. Oh ! Governor. Welcome !" Tha flotilla at once returned to the wharf, passing the Pylades on the way. Bell, tha Mayor, welc6med His Excellency and Lady Ranfurly, amidst cheers, and then the work of delivering theaddros 163l 63 began. The City Council led off with si loyal address, tho sentiments of which Lord Hanfurly said it would give him great pleasure to convey to the Queen. The HJtrbour Board followed, and then came an" addreis from the United Friendly Societies, to both of which brief replies were returned, His Excellency speaking in a clear voice, with considerable expression. Mr Tv MacKenzio, a very old settlor, and one of the few now left, also welcomed the Governor on his own account, and Lord Ranfurly expressed hi 3 gratification to the veteran in a few pleasant words. This finished the formal part of the proceedings, and after cheers for Lord and Lady Ranfuriy, the carriages were brought up. The horses were rather excitable, and, though there were t«ro postillionc and an outrider, the help of some jconstables was needed to get them through the crowd safely. Finally, the Vice-Regal party moved off, accompanied by » saluto from the troops and volunteers who lined the way. At tho entrance to the wharf a band of Maoris of both sexes gars a song and dance of welcome, and then escorted the Governor's carriage through the streets. At the h«ad of the procession rod* a strong body of cyclists, and the Fire Brigade followed after. Behind them wera tho rations trados, Frisndly Societies, &c, with their banners. Tha 'military marched direct to ihe Parliament Buildings and lined the approiches. Trie streets were thronged, and there was a good deal of cheering at various points as the Governor's carriage appeared. Upon arrival at Parliament House, where a dais was erected over the front steps, the formal ceremony of swearing in the new Governor was performed by the Chief Justice. A salute was fired by the D Battery, and with this a very successful function cams to an end.
