AUSTRALIANS V. THORTON'S ELEVEN.
[per press association.] London, August 31.—The Australians began a match at Scarboro to-day against a strong team got together by Mr C. I. Thornton, and composed of L. P.alairet, Smith, JacksoE, Captain, Wynyard, Sir T. C. O'Brien, Peel, Davidson, Storer, Brown, Tunnecliffe, and J. T. Hoarne. Eady, Johns, and Graham stood out of the colonial eleven. ' , The attendance was very larga acd weather fine, but the wicket slow owing to recent rains. , :':' ' The home team won the toss and went, in, losing one wicket for'l39. ,! Palairet . ... ... , , 71 Jackson, not out ... 60 SYDNEY, September I.—So far no reply' has been received from Mr Muggrove or other members of the Australian Eleven to whom cables were sent. Mr Gibson, Chairman of the Cricket Council, who has full power of action, is in favor of perpetual disqualification, but the Associations of the several colonies are rather apathetic in support of the Council. That of N.*w South Wales is most emphatic, but even here there are signs of weakness.
