London, June 80. The Canadian Government is urging Great Britain to accept the tender of the Allan Line for a fast steam service.

RE-UNION OF CHURCHES.

The Pope has issued an encyclical letter in which he declares the Church will not relax any part of its doctrine or discipline in order to secure re-union with the Anglican Communion. Ho claims absolute submission of the faithful to episcopal orders, and the disorderly crowd as unobedient to St, Peter. Cardinal Vaughan, commenting on tho letter, says it dispels hazy theories and delusive hopes.

THE WOOL SALES. 9918 bales of wool were catalogued on the opening day of the series, but the selection was only mediocre. There was a large attendance of buyers from home and the Continent, but Americana were absent. Competition was splendid. Crossbreds were unchanged, but merinos declined 5 per cent, the fall being most noticeable in inferior sorts. BRITISH REVENUE RETURNS. ' t London, July 1. The revenue for the quarter was £24,011,000. Excise, £6,962.000; customs produce, £4,936,000 : stamps, £187,000. OLD AGE PENSION SCHEME. The Treasury has appointed a Commission of Experts to enquire into the practicability of various shemes put forward for establishing old age pensions. ARREST OF A GANG OF BURGLARS. Pabis, July I. Twenty one burglars, belonging to a remarkably well organised gang, have been arrested in Parris. They are credited with some two hundred robberies, chiefly from churches. Eleven of their raids resulted in spoil amounting to 333,000 francs.

Rojik, July 1, The Duke of Lermoneta, speaking in tho Chamber of Deputies, said Italy would be faithful to the Triple Alliance, friendly with England, and cordial to other Powers, and would also insist on the status quo in tripoli.
