THE COURT SINGERS.

There was a fairly numerous audience in the Alexandra Hall on Friday night to hear the concert given by the Court Singers, who have achieved a great deal of success in their tour in the south. The audience appeared to quickly recognise the merits of the vocalists, for the encores, were numerous during the evening, a demand being made for the repetition of almost every number on the programme. Madame Margarethe von Vahsel,who has i a highly cultivated and flexible soprano j voice, scored in the jewel song from " Faust," ".Ave Maria," " The Toilers," and also shared the honours with Mr Rudolf Schmalfeld in the duets " Now Thou Art Mine," " Cavalleria Rusticana." and in the trio, " O ! Memory," with Miss Fisher and Mr Schmalfeld. Miss Fisher, who is a daughter of Mr G. Fisher, Mayor of Wellingtonf possesses a contralto voice of much power and considerable sweetness. The young lady gave several numbers during the evening, the best being " Beauty's Eyes" and " Three Fishers." Mr R. Schmalfeld sang with great taste and expression, and won well merited : applause for the songs, " Flowery May" and " The Two Grenadiers." 'in the I duets with Mmc Von Vahsel he was also very successful. The Company possess a fine pianiste in Miss Mcßurney, who, besides playing the accompaniments, played two solos in an art'itic manner. Mr R. Cottier played a vio i; n obligate to Mis'? Fishei '• so'o,! 11 Beauty's Eyes," and accompanied Mme. Von Vahsel in the " Aye Maria." The concert was a pronounced musical success. The Court Singers return South on Tuesday.
