FLAYING OF CATTLE,
One of the leading buyers of stock in Melbourne has given the matter of flaying cattle the most careful attention, and he now insists upon the flayiDg of carcases being done in a manner to cause iVe smallest injury to the hide. Of course bad branding in sometimes the cause of indifferent flaying, as whera the impression fans sunk deeply into the hide, its removal is rendered a'l the more difficult, and causes hacking and no ching, which naturally spoil the hest part of tVe leather. More attention should also be paid to keep ing tho hide clean, and tlvy should be ta'.t as Foon as possible ; otherwise they bocome slippcy, the hair comes off, ufld tho grain of the leather becomes damaged. Tin proper tieatment of hidts has o"cap ed tho serious consideration of those engaged in the tannery industry, acd it would be well if an association were foimed on the line* of tho Gla-'gow Hide Inspection Society, which und rtakes tin inspection I class ; fration and weighing of all hides put on the market Climatic condi ions hive a tnarket effect on the quality of hides. Iv I cold countries they nrs much heavier than in milder regious, and are consequently more valuable. The Australian trade of the future will be largely in light hides partly becauso of the c'imate an! pmly owing to the expansion the trade in foreign meat. Me-it companies, as a rule, kill nothing over three or four years o ! d, and cs a natnra'l result the hides are not developed to their full thieknes*. In the circumstances, branding and flaying become of the highest importance, as it is j eFß»ntial the Australian light hides should go | ipon the market in the best possible cemditioa. Uwiog t<\ tt«> increasing demand for the cattle m Queensland and New bouth Wales for freezing purposes, very largely on breeding from her own stock, and, owing to the colder climate, the hides of such stock will be in more demand than those of the northern colonies. Anything, thprefore, that will improve the value of Victorian hides deserves the at tention of thoee who may be either directly or indirectly associated with the industry, and if grazieis will txeraizecare in branding;, and slanghterara observe n little skill in flayin?, the profits of one of our largest indus'ries will be very sensibly increased. •
