Severe earthquake shocks visited Austria and several parts of Italy on the night of Sunday, April 14, causing -widespread panic and destruction. The disturbance affected an area of over 300 m los, roughly speaking, from Ferr, ara to Vienna. The " seiimic focus " is described as having been a triangle, which is formed by Trieste, Fiurno, and Laibach. The shocks came in sudden succession. The earth seemed to snay, or, as some reports say, swirl. Buildings rocked, cracked, and fell. Railway traius were shaken almost ofl their lines. The only meteorological institute in Austria which recorded exact observations on Sunday night was the Naval Academy in Fiume. According to the figures it publishes, the first shock lasted sixty-five seconds ; the second, five ; the third and fouith, three seconds ; the fifth, forty seconds ; tho sixth and eighth, fifteen seconds ; the ninth and tenth, five ; the eleventh, eight seconds. Reports of inexperienced observers gave the maximum duration as twenty-five seconds, and, instead of the eleven shocks registered in Fiume, they asserted that no less than thirty-ono, of which tho first was the strongest, were felt in Laibach between half-past eleven and seven o'clock in tho morning. Considering tho extent and severity of tho shocks, the loss of life has been romarkably small, not mpre than about a doeon persons having been killed throughout Austria. Telegrams havo boen received from all parts of the southern provinces describing the 'graat damage done. At Laibach, where further alight shocks were felt on Monday and Tuesday, two parsons were killed, and ten others severely injured. In the vicinity of Laibach seven other persons were killed, while throe children lost their lives at Rodica. Accoiding to observations made at the Maine Observatory at Pola, the seismic vibrations wore preceded for two days by n rapid fall of the- .barometer, by a hurricano of wind, by a boro on the incoming Bea, and by a fall of the thermometer. Four severe shocks were ob*erved, at seventeen , mirfutes past eleven p.m., at twenty-five minutes past foar a.m., and at seven a.m. According to the observations made at the Marine Academy, there wore eleven shocks at Fiurae. Tho first lasted sixty-five and the fifth lasted forty seconds. It is feared that the disturbances will cause the extensive caverns in the distriofc of Karat to collapse. The inhabitants of several to<vns of Carniola spent the night in the open air. Venice was tho scene of a panic, and the Square of St. Mark was filled with tents, whero the people passed the night. The public gardens were crowded with inhabitants, who were afraid to sleep in their houses. There were renewed shocks of earthquake at Laibach and Trieste early on Wednesday morning, but not much damage was done. The distress at Laibach is very great.
