The child was traced from the hands of its grandmother", a Christchurch woman, who gave it to Mrs Dean, passing as Mrs Gray, at the Bluff, who weut to Winton on April 30, thence to Dipton on May 2 by train with Mr Dean. The child was iv the carriage of the evening train to Luciadun when the guard passed thiough the first and second time*, but disappeared before Lumsdcn was reached, and at no subsequent time was it seen with her. The tin box which she carried was light at Dipton. At Lumsden a 12-year-old boy could scarcely carry it, and it was heavy when she returned home on Saturday without the child but with her clothes, and those of the smaller baby in a parcel. The girl who went to meet Mrs Dean at the train said that she told her the box contained bulbs from a lady at Matawa, but this was^ denied by the girl. Mrs Dean left the box all night in the rushes in a paddock, and brought it to tha house on Sunday still as heavy as on Wednesday. ,AU the railway guards identified Mrs ' Dean, who is well-known through frequent travelling, and a chemist at the Bluff deposed to selling laudanum on April 30th, when she signed tho poison book " M. Gray," the writing being identified as Mrs Dean's. The inquest will be continued tomorrow.
