OBITUARY.
DEATH OF AN OLD SETTLER. Mr Charles Sampson, who died on Sunday, was a native of Dorset, England, and came out to the colony in the Timandra, in February, 1842, and sottled on land at Henui, now known as Fitzroy. Some years after Mr Sampson took up land at Bell Block, where ho resided till the Maori rebellion broke out. He, like all the other settlers, had to vacate their land, com© into town, nnd take a part in suppressing the rebellion, he being a member of the Taranaki Militia. On the declaration of peace Mr Sampson went to reside at Hua, where he carried on the pursuit of farming till, some eight years ago, when be left the farm and came into town to reside. M.f Sampson has resided in town ever since, and was üble to be about till some four wee s ago, when he was confined to his residence through illness, and passed quietly away on Sunday afternoon at the ripe age of 77 years. Mr Sampson always took an active part in local government in his district, and was also, up to the time of his death, a director of tho New Plymouth Co-opera-tive Society, and an original member of the Friendly Society. He leaves a widow and large family, who all reside in the colony. The members of the family are Mr 3A. J. ire-kin (Hell Block), Mrs T. Clare (Waihi), Mrs Smaller (Stratford), Mrs J. Rattenburv ('I ongaporutu), Mrs H. Rattenbury (Bell Block), Mrs Gilbert (Wanganui), Mrs G. Looney (Oakura). The eoiia are Messrs G. Sampson ( Waitara), J. Sampson (Hua), F. Sampson (Sentry Hill).
