[FnOM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.] PLAIN AND FANCY DRESS SOCIAL Avkil 30.-A plain and fancy dres» social in aid of the Catholic Church sittings was held in the Town Hall on Wednesday evening, and iv every respect it was a thorough success. There were between 200 and 300 present, who thoroughly enjoyed themselves, and pronounced the social to bQ one of the very beat entertainments that has eventuated hero. -The decorations, under the management of Mr Des Forges, were as' usual magnificent. The floor was Al, and the stage was fitted up as a drawing-room. Mrs Kennedy, of Kennedy s Hotel", lent her suite of furniture for tho occasion, which was highly appreciated. Mr Des Forges lent a large mirror to ornament the hall, and Mra Knowles and Mrs Kennedy kindly lent ornaments for the evening. There was a large temporary supper room erected to seat about 60 persons, and the tablo was loaded with roast turkeys, fowls, geese, ducks, and sucking pigs, besides numerous " entrees," fruit, 1 and sweets wero in abundance Ulesdames Twomey, O'Brien, Kennedy, if; Hickey, Stevenson, Sellars, Higgins, ShGcrin, and Flynn, and Mias Tate, with Messrs W. D. Scott, Robinson, B. Bailey, aud others were very euergetic in attending to 'the wants of visitors at tho supper tabie. Messrs Armstrong and Christie were the M.C.'s. The fancy costumei were well represented. A ballot took place for Mrs Kennedy's prizes for the prettiest costumes, which wero Ti beautiful large album for the lady,and a^ilvormounted pipe and a silver mounted cigari holder for the gentlemen. The vfcting was as follows;—Mra Y. Harrison, of Rahotu, Fisherwoman (37 votes); Miss' A. Hickey, Stars and Stripes (28) ■; Miss Prosser, United Kingdom (17); Misj Carter, Spanish Dancing Girl (17)1 These were the highest out of seventeen competitors. Mrs Harrison was declared winner. Seccombe, G. W. Rogers, and Murphy. Misses O. Callaghan, Newsham, Stevenson, Tait, McLeod, Holmes, Prosser. Messrs J. Latubie, Stockman; J. O'Brien, Clown; "E. Edmunds, Fisherman ; F. West, Fisherman ; G. Mason, Spanish Cavalier ;.F. Guy, Footballer; T. A. Bushe-Bailey, Colonel; Dempster,' Infantry. The musical portion of the programme was mostly performed by Miss Taifc, Mrs Breach, Mrs Harrison, &c. Tho night was fine, the music capital. It has been mentioned to mo that it would be'better at entertainments of this kind, to start supper at 11 o'clock, as it take 3 a con-, siderable time to get through with it when there are two or three hundred mouths to eat. The supply of provision^ was more than ample, which necessitated Mr Scott disposing of what remained at auction the following day.
