It is reported in Wellington that a powerful democratic paper is to be started by the proprietors of the Melqourne Age. A cycle cab is the latest novelty to be seen in London. During the late gale off Holyheadj Wales, the barque Asseo was wrecked and twenty^six men drowned* Another financial scandal been discovered in Paris, and a number of bankers, politicians, and contractors been arrested. The half-} airly! revenue of Victoria has fallen short by £61,000 of Treasurer s estimate. [ Exceptionally cold weather has been experienced at Hobarfc. Imports and exports of New South Wales show a large decrease for the year. During the year just ended there were eighteen wrecks on coast of Now South Wales. The bankruptcies in New South Wales for year 1894 numbered 1465. The liabilities amounted to £1,852,000 and assets £995,000. Direct steamer Eimutaka arrived at Wellington from London on Monday morning. j In Sydney the weather for the holidays was dull, with occasional showers. Amongst the New Year's honors Mr Cecil Rhodes is created a Privy Councillor. A company has baen started to establish a direct steam service between Manchester and Australia. Appeal of Capfc. Dufrei, found guilty of selling military plans to spies, has been dismissed. Chief of the New York police (Byrnes) has resigned owing to exposure of Committee of Enquiry. Fearful tragedy has occurred in Paris. Three men and a, woman found mutilated under a staircase, and a man hanging by a rope. Hori Nania, a well known Hawke's Bay Chief, died at Takapau on Sunday morning. .
