PETROLEUM SYNDICATE. fTpHE undermentioned persons have subJL scribed the sums of money set opposite their names, with the hope of procuring a test; of the petrolem deposits at Moturoa. They purohased the lease and the plant and machinery, put everything in order, and set about endeavoring to clear out the bore, which was some years ago sunk by the former owners to a depth of about 900 feet. It was anticipated that the capital subscribed would suffice to do this and sink at least another 100 feet should it be found necessary to do so, — although the reports of the head driller of the former Company showed thai at 900 teet he was "in oil" and "able to " pump up about four barrels(l6o gallons) 1 " per da} r of the " most valuable oil he ever savr." Unfortunately the efforts to clear out tbe bore have failed, and the present bore must be abandoned. This is extremely to be regretted, as up to the last week indications -were most encouraging, — oil of a very valuable character risingfreely. Afurthersum of £500atle.i3t •will be required to warrant undertaking the sinking of a new bore to a depth of 1000 feet. The subscribers met on the 12th September, and decided to dismantle the works, surrender the lease, and remove and sell the whole of the plant and machinery (which the late head driller stated he was Convinced ought to realise £1000 if sent to another colony where a market for boring plant exists) unless additional subscriptions to the amount of £500 are received. The subscribers have already made it widely known that sufficient funds have not been forthcoming, bat -without effect. Before taking tho decisive step of, abandoning the attempt and thus rendering it impossible to take advantage of the completo plant and buildings now available, as well as of the fair and equitable lease which is still in existence, the subscribers wish to place once more prominently before the public the above facts, with the hope that the requisite £500 may be subscribed by the addition of subscribers (who will, in caso luffisient is subscribed, in all respects rank and be treated pro rata in the same manner aa themselves). Should a less sum be subscribed than sufficient to warrant the subscribers in continuing the attempt, the amounts subscribed iv response to this appeal -will be repaid in. full. Mr B. G-. Bauchope, of Broughamstreet, New Plymouth, has kindly consented to furnish all information in his possession, an<3 to receire subscriptions (which have, now been lowered to five pounds, from or in the Dame of any one person) ; and the subscribers — including those who may respond to this invitation —will meet at Sir Banchope's office on "Wednesday, 26th September, at 3 p.m., to finally determine whether or not to realise in tho manner above mentioned; and the result will depend on the amount of additional subscriptions received by them. The subscribers do not disgui'e tho risk, but they do hope that there is enough public spirit and enterprise to enable this attempt to be made, which, if successful, will confer incalculable benefits on the whole district at a comparatively trifling cost. £ s. d.
