Melbourne-,* September 17. The hundred-mile bicycle road race was won by Beeson, in six hours fifty-nine sees. Eighteen of the competitors finished. Sydnet, September 16. The H.M.S. Ringarooma was floated off the reef with the assistance of the French warship, Duchaffadlt, and the steamer Croydon, and is not making much water. Her hull is badly damaged but her nnderskin is not injured. She is now lying in Port Sandwich, taking in her guns and stores, and will probably proceed to Noumea, in company with H.M.S. Orlando and Wallaroo. After effecting temporary repairs she will come on to Sydney. The Ringarooma's forefoot is considerably strained. Newcastle, September 17. * Thtfe Marine Board/ found Captain Mars, of the steamer Colonist, which went ashore in crossing tho Newcastlo bar, guilty of default, and have called upon him to show cause why his ceitificato should not be suspended. Brisbane, September 17. Owing to financial reasons it has been found necessary to reduce the strength of tho Defence Force by 400 officers and men. Hobabt, September 17. The Hobart Chamber of Commerco has invited the Chambers in Australia and New Zealand to join in holding a conference during the session of the Federal Council.
