Tho Crown Lands Department is now offering for selection sixteen sections of lands, varying from 41 to 137 acres in area, adjoining the North Egmont Forest Reserve. The land is distant only 11 miles from New Plymouth, and ton from Inglewood, and is offered at low rates, as that it should be readily taken up. Messrs Napier Bell and Maxwell, consulting ongineors employed by the Napier Harbour Beard, have presented their report on tho breakwater. They estimate that to make good the damage by the late gales and to thoroughly strengthen that portion of the work will cost £ll>,ooo, but they add that in works of that nature much more serious damage is common. They also recommend the strengthening of the future works and widening of the rubble foundation. They estimate that when the work is completed a much larger enclosed harbor than was originally contemplated, with more berthage accommodation, will be provided at a smaller cost than was estimated by the consulting engineers (one of whom was Mr Bell) employed to report on Mr Goodall's original scheme before the breakwater was commenced. The New Zealand Times gives the meaning of Petone as " tho end of the sandwich." The PoU says it is correctly " the end of tho sand."
