[We arc not responsible) for the opinions ex pressed by correspondents. The writer's nanid ns n, Ruariuitco of good faith, must bo onclosuo iv thu letter.] OUR FOOTBALLERS. TO TEE EDITOR. Sin, — Seeing that our foot! allers have been t>o successful throughout Jfew Zealand, and against Xew South Wales, I think it is only right that the ladies of New Plymouth should combine and give , them a hearty reception on their return from the south. Hoping that .something will be done in the matter before it is too late. — I am, &c, A Mother of OPUNAKE MAIL SERVICE. TO THE EDirOB. Sin, — I observe thai tenders are invitad for conveyance of mails from New Plymouth to Opunake, thrice weekly ; from Hawcra. to Opunake daily ; I think.that under the circumstances, since Mr Job Vile has had the contract, under such able drivers, such as Messrs Prenter. on the New Plymouth section, with Mr Vile, senr., on the Hawera section, no one (an deny that their contract has been carried out with credit to them ; punctuality, civility, good horses, with very convenient coaches, ihe public- travellers, or settlers, I have no hesitation in sajing, give them the highest praise for the efficient manner i they have carried out their contract, for never did they anticipate that bridges would be washed away and not repaired for buch a long period, and where honor is due such should be given. — I am, &c, G. W. Gani:. Oaonui, September 8. HOW THIT^UIfLIO~ARE~ TAXED. TO Till: EDITOR. Sir. — I sent in p. tender for a native lease, to bo opened on September -lth, depositing six months rent, with £.'S os for the lease and registration, and 5 ( for stamp duty, via., 2s 6d payable on lease and '2s 6d pajablo on counterpart. A declaration had to be made before a Justico, to which had to be affixed 2s (id stamp, to be cancelled and dated. There were 82 tenders sent in, a 2s Gd stamp on each, but only 33 suctions were dealt with, showing the stamps affixed, amounted to £10 os, of which £6 2s 6d was paid by us, for the honor I presume of being the unsuccessful tenderers for a native lease, fpr which, J have no inclination of having such honor even by paying 2s fid "When I expend a sum of money, I desire something equivalent in value as a rule, and I havo no doubt others are of the same nature. I wrote to tho Public Trustee ou the subject, receiving a reply. ''That every declaration under the Jus tice of Peace Act, 1882, must bear 2s Gd .stamp."' Who will say after this that tho Ju^ico of Peaco Act should bi almli hod. "X it noL a good way to plu'-k the i;oose -without making him squeal and ..well the consolidated coffers ? 1 ina\ say this pri <cut (iarem iicui did not pus:this \no-tsui-v! Ihoroioro the bli'.mo is not on them. — I am, oic, G.W.Gant., y.ionui, Opuinikc.
