TARANAKI COUNTY COUNCIL
A special mfieting of the Council was held on Monday. Present : Messrs Bewley (chairman), Connett, Tate, Horrocks, McCullum, Okey, Adlarn, McGloin, and Peters. Extension. — Mr Dickson, contractor for tho Heimama bridge, was granted an extension of time till September 16 to complete his contract. Searching Titles. — Tho Commissioner of Taxes wrote stating that he did not propose to allow local bodies or their valuers to search titles at the Lands anel Deeds Registry Office free of charge. — A copy of the letter will be sent to the members for the Province. ' Tailgate. — The Chairman was instructed to take action if advised that an evasion of toll is being made atl Waiwakaiho. It was decided to send a letter of thanks to Mr Samuel for bringing under the notice of tho Council that the toll-gates had not been legally established. Tho question of calling for tenders for tho gates was deferred till November. Oi'i rduc Rates. — The Clerk was granted £25 for collecting overdue rates. Not on Roll. — Mr McGloin brought up the question of property owners not having their names on the roll. It was decided that no alteration in the roll be made without the consent of the Council. ll7(c< / Ta.r. — It was decided to write to the Colonial Treasurer asking him to get the Governor's assent to the wheel tax-; and Mr E. M. Smith, M.H.R., will also be written to on the subject. Balance-sheet. — The balance-sheet as audited was adopted. Mr Hoi; rocks moved for a return showing (1) the amount voted by the Council since March 31 ; (2) sums expended to wipe off old liabilities ; (3) the amount of liabilities at d.itc. Seconded by Mr Pr.TUKs, and carried. Gravel Contract. — The Council decided to measure up tho gravel carted between Waiaua and Mangahume rivers, pay the contractors, and allow the balance of contract to remain in abeyance. .Jhe Council adjourned.
