A dull bleak morning — very cold wtather. Thermometer " under the verandah " lit 2 p.m. to-day, 54 degrees. A conference of County Councils is now taking place in Wellington. Taranaki County is not represented on it. Petitions are being f orwarded to Upper and Lower Houses of Parliament against proposed duties on imported fruit. Mr Byron de Winton lectured to a large audience last night, his subject being " Women." Cholera is spreading in Holland. Trial of thirty leading Anarchist* has been commenced in Paris. Attempt has been made in Brussels to dynamite the Royal Palace. Canada is inviting tenders for laying and maintaining Pacific cable. Yacht Vigilant has again defeated the | Britannia. Grace and Murdoch, cricketers, were mobbed by the crowd at Bristol. Li Hung Chang estimates indemnity due to China by Japan for sinking the Kowshung at £700,000. Chinese Government will not obstruct approaches to the town of Shanghai. Tribesmen at Thibet seized and ! drowned the French explorer Dutreil. Mr Campbell, collector of customs at Tonga, has charged Mr C. D. Whitcombe with libel, and the latter has been committed for trial. Mr C. D. Whitcombe is Foreign Secretary to the Tongan Government. Estimated Eufdpean population of the colony on June* 30th last was 678,586, and Maoris 41,993. The Government are offering £2 a ton on 100 tons of starch manufactured in the colony. Loan and Mercantile Agency Company intend to retain half a million of capital in hand as a liquid asset. The coolness of captain and officers on the Miowera when she went ashore on \ the coast of Norway prevented a panic, j Pilot who was on board the Miowera is blamed for the accident.
