INGLEWOOD.

[from odb own correspondent.]

INGLEWOOD SCHOOL COMMITTE.

The usual monthly meeting was held on Thursday. Present — Messrs Tarplee (Chairman), Lamb, Newland, Williams, Surrey, Sutherland, Nichol, Spurdle and McCarthy. A letter was received from the Secretary of the Board of Education, informing the Committee that the sum of £20 18s 3d had been placed in the bank to their credit, distributed to each of the four schools as follows : — Inglewood School £19 15s, Norfolk Road School £4 18s 4d, Dudly Road School £3 4s 6d, Wortley Road School £3 0s od. A letter was read from the teachei of Wortley Road school stating that the dividing fence was blown down by tho ■wind and required repairing; also that the water tank was leaking, and that a drinking cup was required. Mr J. Newland was instructed to see to the matters complained of, and to have the tank repaired. — It was proposed by Mr Sutherland, and seconded, '-That tenders be called for supplying firewood for Inglewood, Norfolk Road, and Wortley Road schools. — Carried Mr Murray reported that he had inspected the Wortley Road School. Mr Surrey complained that the ground round the Dudley Road School was in a very muddj' state and required some gravelling, as the children were up to their knees in mud. — It was proposed by Mr Sutherland, seconded by Mr McCarthy, "That the Board of Education be requested to have the ground gravelled, as the Committee's funds were not sufficient for such an outlay." They had, no doubt, but that the Board would grant the request. — A letter drafted by Mr Sutherland was read at the meeting, asking for the sanction of the members to have it forwarded to the S.M., New Plymouth, who will send same on to the Government, requesting, that a Magistrate's Court be held once a fortnight or monthly at Inglewood, to enable the School Committee to have cases of absentee children dealt with at little expense, their funds not being sufficient to take such cases to New Plymouth. It was agreed to forward the letter. Mr Newland mentioned that he did not consider it right that little girls should receive corporal punishment in front of boys. — After some remarks by a few of the members the matter dropped. A few accounts were passed for payment. Some of the members of the Inglewood Wesleyan Church have formed a working bee; and are doing good work. They have cut down and grubbed four large trees, and are clearing the ground for the foundation of the new church. They meet every Wednesday and Saturday afternoons, and work till dark. This is something like business. Three accidents occurred here on Thursday. Seven of Mr J. Coldwell's family were poisoned by eating tinned sardines. Medical assistance was procured as soon as possible, and I am happy to say that all of thorn are fast recovering from the effects. Mrs Gilmour, was milking a cow when the leg rope loosened during the operation, and the cow kicked her on the forehead and other parts of the body. She lay for some time insensible, and were it not for Mr Crozier, who was passing at the time, removing her from under the cow's feet, it would have fared bad with her. A son of Mr Rawlinson, who was riding in a trolly on Mr H. Brown's tramway, received a severe cut on the left temple from a piece of iron from one of the wheels or rail breaking off and strikiug him. Mr Thos. Brough has sold his Waipuku Hotel, but the purchaser's name I have not heard.
