DEATH FROM WANT IN AUCKLAND.
An unfortunate destitute old man named Thomas Perriman, sa>s the Auckland Star, who had for some time past been doing "odd jobs'' about town, died in the District Hospital this morning at the age of about 68 years, the main cau-e of death being want of nourisluuent, accelerated by exposure. The old fellowhad been doing some work at bill posting occasionally, aud used to frequent tho City Hall corner, being in the habit of sleoping out anywhere at nights. His enfeebled and miserable state aroused the attention of the police some time ago, and as the constables did not ' wish to " run him in " the Charitable Aid Board authorities were informed of his condition, and relief was offered to him. He would not accept it, however, and he pottered about half -starving until he had to be taken to the hospital. It was too late, however, for he died literally from want of the necessaries of life. It would probably have been an act of mercy if the police had arrested him in the first place, as the old man was too feeble to work. Thomas Perriman's j name was called on at the Police Court this morning in connection with a charge of " having no lawful visible means of support." The old man did not appear. He had been called to a higher bar than the Police Court.
