EDUCATION BOARD.

The Board met on Tuesday. Present : Mr Bauchope (in the chairV Miss Heywood, Messrs Allsworth, Adlam, Hill, Faull, and Wade. Correspondence. — The secretary of the Inglewood School Committee wrote asking the Board to increase the accomodation at the Inglewood School, and also desiring the Board to fence in the school grounds at Norfolk-road. — The secretary was instructed to get information re Dudley-road and report ; and the architect and inspector were to report on enlargement of Inglewood School. — Mr J. Grant wrote asking the Board to remedy the chimney in his house. It was decided as the Board had tried various remedies for smoking chimneys, it is prepared to consider any proposal from committees for that purpose. — Mr Roebuck wrote, enclosing a letter from Mrs Cheyne, teacher at Tataraimaka, asking for more desks. The chairman was authorized to deal with the matter. Election of Members. — The following is the result of the election : J. Mackay, 24 ; H. Faull, 23 ; W. Ambury, 15 ; and G. Burgess, 12. There was one informal vote. The chairman declared the first three gentlemen duly elected. ProchionulCommiitees. — TheCHAiUMAN intimated that doubting whether provisional committees had power to vote for the election of members to the Board, he had got the opinion of the Board's solicitor on the question, which was that provisional committees had not the power to vote. A resolution Avas passed approving of the Chairman's action. Capitation. — It was decided that tho capitation allowed to school committees be increased 10 per cent, as long as the Education Department pay on the working average. School Site. — The School Commissioners were requested to purchase a school site of 2 acres on sec. 66, Block 12, Cape, for the sum of £10. Auditor.— The secretary of the Board was appointed auditor of the school committees' accounts at a fee of £5 ss. Cltairmaris Annual Report. — The Chairman presented his annual report. Amongst other matters referred to was the question of teachers' residences, which, owing to the Board's heavy expenpenditure for new schools, they had been unable to attend to. Three new schools have been opened in the district during the year. The revenue of the Board for the past year was £12,370 19s 9d; the expenditure £10,588 14s 8d; and the balance to the Board's credit was £1782 os Id. — Mr Allsworth moved, and Mr Wave seconded, "That the Chairman receive the thanks of the Board for his report for the year 1893." Carried. — It was also decided to print the report. Mr Thos. Avery's tender for printing tha report, being the lowest, was accepted. Petitions for Erection of New Schools. — A petition from the settlers of Beaconsfield and Stanley Roads was referred to the inspector to report on. A petition from residents of Waihi district objecting to the proposed school site was read. A deputation waited on the Board regarding this matter, and laid before the membei's offers of sites from Mrs Marsh and Mr J. Colesby. It was resolved that the Chairman enquire into all the circumstances connected with the sites at Waihi. Appointments. — Miss Minnie Morton was appointed as' assistant mistress at Midhirst, and Miss M. Gow was appointed teacher at the Salisbury Road school. Miss Gow's resignation of the Upper Kent Road school was accepted. Accounts were passed for payment, and the Board rose.
