TIKORANGI.

[from oub own correspondent.] March 8. — On Thursday evening Mr Halcombe, jun., gave a phonographic entertainment at the Tikorangi Hall. There was a good attendance, and from the manner the various songs, instrumental pieces, &c, were applauded, it must have given general satisfaction and been thoroughly appreciated I hear the takings were over £5. The annual Waitara Regatta will take place in a few days. Our young men and women have been training at the usual place — Ford's, Upper Waitara. They now go every evening to Waitara for practice, and to get accustomed to their boat there, it being a different one to that which they practice in. The ladies' crew was only got together about a fortnight since, as there was a doubt as to there being a Ladies' Boat Race. It is unfortunate there is so short a time for practice. I believe, however, that they will give a good account of themselves. Opinions vary as to the winner of the champion race.- Some are favourable to Clifton, others to Tikorangi. Now it would just upset them should Waitara win, as in last year's race. Tikorangi was thought to be nowhere. They however won. Clif ten is spoken of as Tiko- . rangi No. 2, as four of its crew are from Tikorangi, seceding for some reason or . other. The weather still holds good, and I hope we shall have a fine day. We had a few hours' rain on Sunday. It was much needed, and will do a lot of good. Grain threshing has been going on for a few weeks past, mostly oats. The yield is about the average of 25 bushels to the acre. Turnip crops are fairly good ; potato crops not very good. The caterpillars have played great havoc with the grain crops.
