PRICE OF BUTTER.

TO THE EDITOR,

Silt, — Can you or .any of your readers kindly inform one who or what regulates the price of butter to farmers ! as I find that tho price in' Taranaki is lower than in other places. The rule is in Stratford to take the price from the Buikio' every Saturday morning, that being the price for the week. On the '20th January tho price was 7d for separator, Od for dairy ; but on Tuesday the 2Srd, Mr King arrived, and the price was immediately knocked down Id all round, and in tho next issue of the BuiKir/r, iv the " market reports," there was a head note thus :—": — " London, January 23rd. — Market weaker. Factory, 90s to 106s ; dairy, 78s to 88s." Now, was this head-note inspired by Mr King V as, on the following page, in your Auckland correspondent's market report, it states :—": — " There is a penny rise in butter." I notice, also, that in Canterbury tho prices are — Factory, 8d to lOd ; dairy, 7d to 8d ; and, I find tho prico in Canterbury is always higher than in Taranaki. As Taranaki is supposed to bo the best butter producing district in New Zealand, how is it that tho price is lower than elsewhere ? I think this shows that the whole of the district is at tho mercy of a ring. And yet farmers will not combine and form a Co-operative Association, where they would at least get market value for their produce. Thanking you in anticipation. — I am, &c, F. Dixox. Stratford, January 31st, 1894. [Mr Newton King does not "inspire" our London butter market reports, which roach us through the Press Association. Our quotations for butter iv other parts of the colony are sent to us by rohablo persons ; the instance Mr J)ixon refers to of a rise of butter in Auckland coming from Mcssrß G. W. Binnoy & Son.— -En. T.11.~\
