THE WRECK OF GAZELLE.
[PER PKESS ASSOCIATON.] Ixvercargill, Febprary 5. — The barque Gazelle was uninsured, and was valued at abont £2,500. She had five hundred tons of guano aboard, consigned to J. H. Stanley, Dunedin, which was also uninsured. Captain Sveneson died at Thursday Island, and the vessel was in charge of the mate, Charles Rogers. The crew of ten all told were shipped at Auckland.
At the monthly meeting of the Taranaki County Council this (Monday) morning Mr C. Muller, the keeper at the Omata toll-gate, wrote asking that his tenders be accepted by the Council. It seems that the highest tender was accepted for the gate, bnt owing to no sureties being forthcoming Mr Muller, who had the gate last year, was left in charge by the Council, and he now requested that his tender be accepted, in order that he might retain possession of the gate for the year. Mails for Wellington per Takapuna close this day (^Monday) at 7 p.m., and for Auckland per Mahinapua to-morrow (Tuesday) at 7 p.m. Constable Roche is evidently determined to establish a record for running iv drunks, for he arrested an inebriate this (Monday) afternoon, making the third in two days. We are pleased to hear that Mr Harold Thomson has been appointed an assistant clerk of the R.M. Court, Wellington, and leaves for the Empire City at once. This appointment h;is been made in accordance with the Premier's promise that the Government would fittingly recognise Mr Thomson's services in capturing the armed highwayman Wallath in July last. We congratulate Mr H. Thomson on his obtaining the appobitment.
