Coming to the colony from Victoria, whore ho had been engaged mining, about 1858, ho Bocured .the.Go-vernment reward for tho discovo y of gold at the famous Gabriel's Gully although, as a matter of fact, ho was not the first to find gold in tho district, as gold was d'scovered in a gully on tho north bank of the Tuapeka rivor, and not far from the famous gu'ly roino time previously.
