DEATH OF MR JOHN LEWTHWAITE.
Old settlers under the New Zealand Company, and many others, will regret to lenrn, says tho Post, that private letters received by the last mail record tho do.ith in London, on 2nd August, of Mr John Lewthwaite, one o£ ilia original settlers in Taranaki. Durin ; the war, Mr Lethweito removjd with his family to Nelson, where ho continued to reside for many years. Mr Lothwitite was a man of great mechanical skill ani inventive ability. Before emigrating to Now Zealand he invented and patented a machine for printing railway tickets. He thought no more about it until, visiting the Melbourne Exhibition, ho found his own invention at work there. He then discovered that Messrs Waterloo & Son, of London, had for years b?on using his latent, and going to England he successfully established Irs claim and recovered from the firm a very largo sum of money as a composition for royalties. It is Mr Lewthwaite's invention which is still in 1130 for railway ticket printing all the world over, and it is a marvel of ingenuity and simplicity. Some years ago Mr L wthwaite invented a novel method of harbour construction by means of floating piors, and this has been taken up by several companies, who are executing works ac cording to its design in England, South America, and other places. A few years ago we fully described Mr Lewthwaite's harbor system. Personally Mr Lewth waite was most popular, being a man of genial disposition, s lict integrit}', and large-heartedness. In Taranaki, Nelson, and Wellington he was well-known, and highly esteemed as a colonist of the good old sort. He was about 85 years of ago at the timo ol'o 1 ' his death. Mr Lowthwaito was in New Plymouth about ten years ago, and stopped hero for some tinu.
