SHAKESPEARE AND THE CHANNEL TUNNEL.
From the extracts which are subjoined we may be enabled to estimate how Shakespeare would have viewed this project. Take one passage from " Henry VI." : — " 'Tis better using France than trusting ' France ; ' Let us be backed with God and with the seas Which he bath given for fence impregnable, And with their kelps only defend ourselves. In them, and in ourselves, our safety lies." find again, irom " Richard II." :—: — [ , " Thiß sceptred-isle, ' ■ This earth of majosty, this seat of Mars, . " This other Eden; domi-Paradise ; ( This fortress built by Nature for herself Against iiifection and the hand of war, This happy breed of men, this little world ; : This precious stone set in the silver sea Which serves it in the office of a wall, Or as a- most defensive io a house, ' Against the envy of less happier lands ; England ! bound in with the triumphant' sea , : ■• Whose rocky shores beat back the envious siege Of watory Neptune 1" Cassius.
