CHAIRMAN OF THE HARBOUR BOARD.

TO THK EDITOR. Sir, —There wns a letter in your pnper on Monday night signed " Straight Tip," and I was sorry to see the remarks thero respecting a gentleman who has for so jnany years 80 worthily held the Chairmanship of the Harbour Board. If there is an honorable gentleman in the world,, it is Mr Thomas King, and that gentleman has devoted more of his time in the interest of Taranaki, especially the Harbour,.Jhan any other person in the province. To say ho " is vexed to the soul that Mr Smith was tho means of obtaining tho £3000 for the benefit of New Plymonth " (which by the bye wo havo not seen a sixpenco of yet) is so sublimely ridiculous that I cannot but laugh. Tho writer of the letter evidently does not know Mr King, neither does ho know Mr E.M. Smith, M.H R., or ho would not have written as he haß done. For "small nvndedness" and" self-conceit" you have only to read Mr E.M. Smith's speeches in tho Houso, and you will find them exhibited in thoso oratorical displays, " which drew down the langhter of the members every time Mr Smith opened his mouth in tho House." I am sorry to see that Mr Smith and his friend are taking tho attitude they arc doing for they are sure to bring down destruction on their own heads —I am, w Index.
