THE MOUNTAIN HOUSE.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir, — When in your columns 33 r ou urged upon the public the importance of erecting upon the slopes of Mount Egmont a house for the accommodation of tourists aqd mountain climbers, and called upon them for subscriptions in furtherance of that object — a call which the public answered to the extent of nearly £100 — it was never contemplated that the house- was to bo turned into a private hospital for tho benefit of any one individual. Yet such has actually become the ease, as appears by an advertisement I saw, whero 1 road that there are vacancios for a few inoro invalids. By what right the contractor is allowed to grant leave to anyone to use tho house in this manner I am unable to say. He is months behind his contract timo, and should push on with his work instoad of hampering himself with a lot of pooplo, who are sure to be in the way. Aa one of i the subscribers I protest agafußt t\m departure from the true purpose q£ th.o house. I think it will be found that those who are so anxious to tako possession of tho place took no part in helping to get it there — did not subscribe towards it — and now reap all the advantages of it without paying towards its maintenance. Has anyone — or will anyone haye — control of tho premises ? and if so, is ho or they actiug prudently in allowing this seizure ? are questions that are now being freely a6kcd by a good many subscribers. — I am, &c, Indignant.
