BOROUGH VANDALISM.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir,—l hear that notices have been sent to Mr L. A. Hamerton andtoWie owner of the corner section in Courtenay-street nearly opposite the lato residence of Mr District Judge Rawson, to cut down the beautiful oaks growing on their land, or at least to trim them in such a way that their leaves should not make a litter on the streets and cover up the beautiful dust that would otherwise be there. It is said that members of Borough Councils are ex officio devoid of all taste, and it certainly looks as if our Council were no exception to the rule. Civilised countries are planting avenues of trees in the streets. We discourage private owners from trying to remedy the eina Of omission committed by our Council. Surely the wanton mischief that has made our beautiful cemetery like a badly cleared bush section, and has ruined . Marsland Hill, ought to be sufficient for at least three generations of Borough Councillors, including a permanent Mayor ! Can nothing be done to prevent future ravages ? Cannot you help us, Mr Editor, and is there not a Scenery Preservation Society that can raise a voice ?—I am, &c, Pelican in the Wilderness.
