STRATFORD NEWS.

fFROM OUR RESIDENT AGENT.]

December 1. — What a boom there would be in this district if Government would , only rise to the occasion and put land in the market in something like proportion to the demand. Even as it is, with the rapidly growing impression that it is no use coming to Tara; aki for land, Stratford has to-day been alive with people preparing for a shot at the new block. The baoks have been besieged by applicants for marked cheques for deposits, whilst J.P.s have been at a premium for declaration purposes. There was a very largo muster both of j stock and buyers at to-day's cattle sale, and prices showed no sign of being any easier. Grand times for calf-rearers, but I'm afraid there will be long faces among the graziers a year or two hence. La grippe has not relaxed her hold on tho place yet. The street reminds one of an Old Country hydropath resort, with the ploaßuro-seekerß. left out, and whisky taking the placo of tho abominablo waters that visitors protend to drink. The Church of England congregation propose having a Bocial evening in about a month's time to improve their acquaint* ance with the Rev. Mr English, who at that time will have tuken up his residence among us. The proceeds of tho entertainment will be devoted to fencing the churchyard, a muchneedoi improvement.
