EDUCATION BOARD.

The Education Board met on Wednesday. Present : — Miss Hey wood, Messrs T. Kelly (Chairman), Bauchopo, Teed, Fault, Olson, Adlani, Andrews, and Wade. Approved. — A memo was received from tho Incpeotor-General intimating that tho Minister of Education had approved of the Board's proposed amendments in tho regulations for tho examinations of pupil teachers. — The Board passed a resolution in effect that the regulations be deemed to have been duly approved on September 9, when the regulations woro first agreed to by the Board. Enlarging District. — Tho Secretary of tho Wanganui Education Board wrote under date September 30, stating that his Board was consulting the School Committees interested on the question of including a part of tho Stratford County in the Taranaki Education District. — A memo under date September 30 from tho Education Department, Wellington, was read, stating that "yesterday's Gazette contains an order iv Council declaring Stratford County to be part of the Taranaki Education District." A copy of the order was enclosed. — The Board resolved that the completion of the negotiations with tho Wanganui Board with respect to the change of the Education District and the schools involved in tho change be left in the hands of the Chairu,an. Tcach'.rs Wanted. — It was decided to advertise in the dchoolmasier for a teachor for the Stratford School and aßßistant female teacher for the Central School. Referred to Inspector. — The question of the purchase of a globe offered by Mrs Evanß, of Stratford, was left to tho Inspector to deal with. Inglewood. — Messrs Vickera and Stevens, auctioneers, informed tho Board that they sold sec 199, Inglewood, for £80, Mra M. J. Julian being the purchaser. Wailara. — Tho Waitara Committee forwarded an application from Mr H. Mason, B.A , master of Waitara School, for an increase of salary.— rThe Waitara Committee will be informed that the Board has only a rovenue equal to pay salaries on the existing scale, therefore, if the ecalo is materially increased the Board will be unable to meet its payments ; the Board, therefore, cannot see its way to make any special exception. liengnatio-is. — Miss A. M. Roby sent in her resignation aB head mistress of the Central School on account of leaving New Plymouth. The resignation was accepted from November 1. — Miss Florence Buckle resigned her position as pupil teacher in the Lepperton school. — Tho resignation was accepted. Upper Kent Road Appointment. — A long letter was received from Mr D. A Arrowsraith, Chairman of th© Egmont School Committee, with respect to the way the appointment to tho Upper Kent Road Bchool was made by the Board, viz., without consulting the Committee. Tho let er went fully into the question. The Committee desired the Board to make tho appointment again in the formal way. — The Board decided, " That tho Egtuont School Committee bo informed that as tho teacher of the Upper Kent Roid school nas boen duly appointed by the Board tho steps suggested by the Committee cannot now be takon, as it would imply ' that no appointment had been made." Upland Road.— -The Bell Block Committee applied to have a teacher's residence erected at Upland Road school. A memorial was received from a number of settlers, who agreed to do^ill tho carting required in shitting the building at Dorset Road to Upland Road. Tho Board decided to shift tho building at Smart Road to Upland Road for a residence when the building grant was renewed, oil condition that tho carting required was done by the settlers iuterestcd. Tho architect was instructed to make preparations to have tho building shifted. Teachers' institute. — A letter was received from tho lion, hecretary of the Teachers' Institute, forwardiug a number of resolutions passed in couuection with tlio sewing syllabus issued by the Board. The resolutions were :—(1): — (1) Tho Taranaki Board by making knitting and tho completion of garments compulsory demands more than the Government syllabus requires ; (2) the rule that when a school as a wholo falls under a certain standard in sewing no allowance in other subjects is made to the girls acts unfairly on those girls whose sewing is satisfactory ; wo consider it unjust that a bead teacher should suffer in reputation through tho incompetency of a sewing mistress, over whose appointment and work he has no control, and that regulation 22 doe* not hold when there is no mistress or assistant mistress on tho teaching staff. The Institute submitted the following questions for the Board's consideration : — That in (Standards 4, 5, and 6{6 { completion of garments should not bo insisted on ; that if a girl passes in sewing she ought to have • her other work judged more leniently, this being in our opinion the just reading of regulation 22 ; that "a long ribbed stocking" should be removed from standard 4, and put in standard b" ; that "darning and patching fine diaper" shoi.ld not bo required in standard 6, as it is very rarely of any use afterwards ; that when there is no mistress or assistant mistress on* tho regular teaching Btaff, interior sewing .should not militate against tho passes in llie other subjects. — Tho matter was referred to tho Inspector for his report. — The Ins:itulo aso forwarded re» solutions asking the Board to strike out McLeod'a Constitutional Uitjtory iVom the pupil teachers examination ; minting out the injustice that would be louo to scholars il no " A" scholarships .vere offered competition ; and pointing out the short duration of tho holidays iv ibis district as compared with others, and suggesting they might bo beneficially extended.— -The letter >\ aa referred to the uhairinan and Inspector for consideration, d.vi repor

Thanfa. — A voto of thanks was accorded the Ladios Sowing Committee for their valuable services in examining and reporting on the sowing of tho Board's schools during the past year. Architect's Report. — The Architect reported completion of a partition at tho Central School at a cost of £12 14a 3d ; also completion of somo repairs at Tariki Kond. Jfcturn. — A resolution was passed that a return of tho schools whoro tho sewing lias been taken home during tho past year be laid on tho table.
