DEATH OF HON. W. H. SMITH.
London, October 7. The death of the Hon. W. H. Smith was due to a chill caught while yachting, when acute gout followed, and this succeeded in reaching his heart. Mr Gladstone sent a telegram of condolence, and recognising the fine qualities of the deceased gentleman, and his devotion to public service. All the English newspapors make generous references to the deceased, nnd The Times states that not a man is more difficult to replace in the Government.
