MANAIA.
About eighteen miles from Opunake is the thriving little town of Manaia. It has been established about ton years, and already it can boast of its newspaper (the Waimate Witness), banking agencies, auctioneer firms — who hold periodical sales of cattle in the town — besides the usual complement of tradesmen. In the centre of the town there is an obelisk of polished i granite, which was erected to the memory j of all who fell during the "Titoko Waru War," as it was called, in 1868-9, and on the sides are the names of men who lost their lives during tho fighting that took place. The population of the township is about 400. There are 85 dwellings, 185 ! ratepayers, and 324 rateable properties. j The rateable value is estimated at £20,746. I Hawera is about 9i miles from Manaia.
