The result of the Census of New Zealand shows that in five years the colony has increased by 44,870, It is also stated that during that period the excess of births over deaths waß 64,168 ; so it may be said that fully twenty thousand of those born in the colony have been taken away from its shores, besides all who have been supposed to arrive here during the past five years. According to the Registrar-General's estimate at the beginning of the year the population of the colony should have been 630,781, so', the result shows he was 7,429 out in his calculation. The RegistrarGeneral estimated that of the eight thousand whom he can account for as leaving the colonyduring the last five years in excess of arrivals, nearly five thousand were women, and children under the age of five. But what is most extraordinary about the affair, is that whilst our population is not increasing as it should, considering the number of birtks over deaths which are recorded, the exports from the colony are.
