Mrs Mary Lowell, a New York lady, has solved the problem of kindling the kitchen fire -by electricity without the "necessity of leaving one's warm bed 1 A wire connection between the bedroom and the kitchen fire, a bit of platinum placed where the wires, meet in the grate, a scrap of " lightning paper," some tissue paper, and a sprinkling of coals — such is the' apparatus which enables the . ingenious American housewife to light her fire by pressing a button at the bedside. - As an illustration of how the wages go down as Protection goes up, the Neio York Times' publishes the following instructive statement : — " There is in Nsw York an importer and commission merchant who imports the cloth made by a dozen English mills, of which he is the agent:, One of his customers is a large manufacturing firm m Buffalo, which buys of him a certain fabric extensively used in its factory. The English manufacturer's price for this fabric is about 30c a yard. The present duty is 110 per cent, ad valorem, and- tho price here has been 68c a yard. The new Tariff Bill imposes a duty of 140 pei "cent." The" New York commission merchant informed his Buffalo customer that to meet this increased Custoraß charge lie had been compelled ' to ajd 9c a yard to the price of the goods. We are permitted to make the following extract from a letter he has received from the manager of the Buffalo, firm: "You were sotnowhat surprised that we could afford to pay the additional 9c a yard for cloth ; but 1 prepared our work-people for it,- and to day,' by making a out equal to 10 p.*r cent, on their wages all round, I have covered the amount and turned them all into good sound Democrats. That, I take it, i» w good *b a Y*akw.eouU do/ "
