WAITARA.
[from our own correspondent.] April 29. — The annual householders meeting for the election of the School Committee for toe ensuing year was hold in the schoolroom on Monday evening last. There was a large attendance, and a .very orderly meeting. Mr J. R. Clark, ,Jhe Chairman of the outgoing Committee, occupied the chair, and read the annual report, which was unanimously adopted. Each candidate then gave a short address, indicating what were his views on the subject of education generally, and of its application to Waitara in particular. The meeting then proceeded to the election of committee, which resulted as follows :—: — Geo Pearce, 97 ; Win. Oxenham, 86 ; G. V. Tate, 76 ; Frederick Bluck, 65 ; Saiiuel Nicholls, 61 ; James R. Clark, 52 ; Joseph Houston, 45 ; A. Cox, 45 ; H. Hallovan, 43 ; W. Stoddart, 40 ; J. Colson, 39 ; W. Free, 39. The first seven were declared duly elected. Messrs J. E. Moore and J. Bayly withdrew. After the public meeting the newly elected committee met, and on the nomination of Mr Pearce, Mr Bluck was unanimously elected Chairman for the year. The direct steamer Maori arrived on Monday morning early, and was immediately tendered by the punts, the weather being very propitious for the loading of the frozen meat. A child of Mr McKenzie met ,with a serious accident on Monday at midday. A horse gave it a kick on the head.' Mr McKenzie immediately took it into New Plymouth to obtain medical advice. Much sympathy is felt for the distressed parents, and it is hoped the wound is not so serious as was at first thought. The poll of ratepayers for determining whether the number of publican's, on New Zealand wine, or accommodation, or bottle licenses may be respectively increased in the Waitara Licensiug District or not was taken on Monday last, and resulted as follows :— None of the licenses may be increased excepting the -licenses for New Zealand home made wines, which may ba increased.
