GOVERNMENT RETRENCHMENT.
LARGE SAVING TO BE MADE. I PER PRSSS ASSOCIATION.] ! Wellington, March 11. — Important re- ' ductions are about to be made in the public services of tho colony by the following officers being retired :—: — Public Works Department — Consulting Engineer Blackett, four District and Resident Engineers, eleven Assistant Engineers and Draughtsmen, twenty In- ! spectors and ten Clerks (permanent and temporary), representing a saving of about £6000 per annum. Defence Department. — Commander-in-Chief, three Commanders :of Districts, viz., Wellington, New Plymouth, and Auckland, several Captains in the Perma* nent Militia, Storekeepers, and others, the saving being £3000 a year. In addition to these savings another £12.000 will bo saved in connection with defence works. Hitherto the defence works done by prisoners, have been charged to gaols. This will be done away with. Total saving in the Defence Department, £15,000. Polioe Department. — Inspectors J. B. Thomson, T. Moore, A. Thompson, W. Kiely, and S. Goodall, sue to be retired : also Mr Fox, Chief Clerk. The saving being — salaries, £2,225 ; . travelling allowances, incidental expenses, £500. Total, £2,725. In the case of the Consulting Engineer, Mr Blackett, his salary is to come off the Public Works Estimates, and if his services are retained thov must in future bo charged to the Agent-General's Departmsnt. These reductions will take effeot by March 31st, tho end o£ the financial year, the necessary compensations being paid out of unauthorised expenditure. The salaries, of course, will not appear in next year's estimates.
