NOTICE TO CORRESPONDENTS.
Student (Midhirst). — Garibaldi icas living with his sons on the island of Caprera in retirement in 1859. When King Victor Emmanuel, on April 23rd of that year, issued a proclamation to his troops to the effect tfiat as Austria threatened to invade Sardinia he declared war against the Emperor, and called his soldiers to arms. Garibaldi at once responded, and, heading a regiment of volunteers, took part in the tear that ensued between the allies {France and Italy) and Austria, and was prettnt during the principal engagements, viz : Paleslro, Magenta, Malegnano, and Solferino. On November 18th, 1859, he left the "military service for the moment," but writes, ." On the day when Victor E<nmanuel shall again call his soldiers to arms for the redemption of the country, I will once more find a weapon of soms sort and a place by the side *fmy bravt companions." On May sth, 1860, Garibaldi sailed from Genoi with a body of 1000 men, whom hn had induced to volunteer to ats'st the Sicilians in their insu-rection against Francit If. On 10th May he effected a landing at Marsala, and assumed the title of Dictator of Sicily " in the name of Victor Emmanuel, Kinn of Italy." He took every town he attacked, and Victor Emmanuel having been proclaimed King of Italy on September 9th, idly wat annexed to it on December 28th.
