MANAIA.

[from our own correspondent.] September 1. — The sale of Mr W. R. Wright's cows at Manaia, on Friday, as advertised in the Budget, was a very great success. The character of the cows had become widely known, consequently buyers came from Wanganui, Waitotara, and surrounding districts. Bidding was excited from start to finish, £5 17s 6d, £5 15s, £5 12s 6d, down to £4 12s Gd being the prices paid, and every cow was sold at the hammer. Eight hundred store bullocks left Hawera on Friday morning for the Wairarapa. This and the heavy export of beef is causing a wonderful demand for grown steers. Fat cows are not to be had, and prices are high. Sheep, too. have participated in the riso; hoggets that two months ago sold at 7s to 7s 9d making 9s to 10s. One shilling per month is the amount that a sheep is oxpected to leturn the owner. Every paddock on the Plains is full of ewes and lambs, tho season being a good one, and so far as can be seen at present there is every chance of prices maintaining their levelPeople seem to think that the present strike will cause cattle to fall, but I heard it stated that if the strike goes on, and provisions rise to famine prices, that beof will also go up, because the owners can f drive or truck their cattle, being quite independent of colliers, seamen, Unions, and the like. Business is fairly good in Manaia , and almost every day_ sees new settlers going on to bush land in the district. No fewer than thirteen of Mr Wright's 'cows were trucked from Hawera this morning to southern stations.
