The Taranaki Herald. ESTABLISHED 1852 TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 2,1890.
« Tub Btriko has so absorbed public attention that the existence of Parliament has almost been forgotten, but tho members, it seems," are not inclined to allow such an opportunity for notoriety escape them, and the whole of Monday atfernoon was wasted in commenting on a matter, which, from the speeches delivered, it would appear that the members knew very little about. Mr Fish, of Dunodin, made a statement to the effect that the conduct of the " Union since the struggle commenced had been most orderly and exemplary," and yet he must have known that in the very city he represents the strikers had been destroying the goods of Donald Reid & Co. Members like Mr Moss who " seeking tho bubble reputation, even in the ballot box" condemned the Government, condemned the Railway Commissioners, and condemned everything— but the people— who he hopes will vote for him at the coming election. Mr. Ballance was inclined to blame eveiyone, and suggested the appointment by the Government of a Board of Arbitration. Captain Russell, as spokesman for the Ministry, said the Government were determined to keep a neutral attitude in the struggle, and so long ashe held office, he said, he would do all in his power to preserve order in the country. Sir George Grey suggested the appointment of a Committee to interfere in the great struggle; and so they talked and talked away till the dinner hour arrived, when they adjourned. The attitude taken by the Government over the affair is a discreet one, for the appointment by the Government of a Board of Conciliation would bo ■ useless. Any actiou taken toward settling the dispute must come from a source outside the Legislature, or it will bo looked upon by both sides as antagonistic to the interests of parties in struggle. However, the talkative members have had "their say" on the question, and their speeches will occupy so many pages of Hansard — and we hope they will now got on with their work and bring the session quickly to a close.
