CLOSING THE WALLSEND MINK. Greymodth, July 17. The Brunner -' correspondent of the Grey River Argvj says it would appear as if there was some truth in the report that the Wallsend mine will be closed, for tenders are being called to remove the boiler fron tlie Wallsend mine to the Brunner mines, So far the difficulty seems as far from settlement as ever.
There were seven patients in the hospital at the beginning of June; nine were admitted, six discharged, and one died during the month; leaving nine in at the end of the month. The daily average was B*o3, ■ At the Land Board Office this (Thursday) morning five sections were balloted for with . the following result: —H. G. | Gibson, sco 4, block, 18, Ngaire, 900 acres; P.. H. Pease, seo^-block -16, Ngaire/ v B2O acres} A.' McDonnell, sec 4, U6csf "4, Hawera, 800 acres; J. W. F. Jones, sec 5, block 4, Hawera, /720 acres: R. Carraichael, sec 6, block 4f4 f Hawera, 830 acres,. There were 68 applicants for the sections. A light-hearted young man for whom the police are now looking has been taking in vain the name of Mr Thomas Sutherland, of the P. and O. Company, by representing himself the accredited agent of that magnate, and going' about to various rope makera, inspecting their factories,- and affecting to be about to give a mammoth order for all the rope required by a suppositious brace of new steamers. By.this means the youth managed to secure a series of excellent lunches, and to borrow —for a brief halcyon period —sovereigns, and oven fivers, ad lib. At last one of the victims, growing suspicious, visited Mr Sutherland, who fairly roared with laughter on hearing the story. -" My dear sir," he said, " I have not ordered two steamers, and therefore I shall not require any rope for them. But I' am delighted to have made your acquaintance, and as (chuckle) I am just going^Westward and happen, like your young'friend (Hu,.ha H, to have left my purae^t home,,, perhaps, you wouldnt mind - lending" me —-—" But the rope man waited to hear no more. With a profane ejaoulation, he consigned Mr Sutherland to 'unmentionable localities, and pursued by his laughter fled into Leadenhall-street.
