A NIOE LEGAL POINT. Auckland, June 7. A nice legal point was raised on Friday in the trial of Edmund George for seducing a girl under fourteen years of age. The defence was that there was reasonable grounds for the accused believing the girl to be ever fourteen. The jury returned a verdict of guilty, but the judge disagreed. The counsel for the defence urged that the judge, as a Court, could overrnle the jury's verdict nnder the provision of last year's Act in regard to reasonable belief which says, " if in tho opinion of the Court or jury, the prisoner, etc." Judge Conolly reserved tho point for the Court of Appeal. A SLUU^ R'-AMEN T "Wellington, June 7, At the annual meeting of the Licensing Committee, was the renewal of the license to Mrs Townsend of the Pier Hotel. It was refused ou the groxind that the house was frequented byseafaring- men, and should not be conducted by a woman.
